For Patients

This web site was developed to help people with asthma and their loved ones better understand the condition and the importance of keeping it under control. It also provides a source of information for people whose doctors have prescribed ZYFLO CR to help them manage their asthma symptoms.

Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways that can lead to significant disability, and even death, when symptoms are severe and/or uncontrolled. With the right treatment and lifestyle changes, most cases of asthma can be controlled and serious consequences can be avoided. For more than a decade, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a division of the National Institutes of Health, has directed an initiative—the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program—to educate the public about asthma and reduce the risks associated with this disease.

The Understanding Asthma section of this web site provides an overview of the causes of asthma attacks, common asthma "triggers," how asthma is treated, and lifestyle changes that may help prevent or reduce asthma symptoms.

In About ZYFLO CR, you'll find information about how ZYFLO CR works, which type of asthma patients may be appropriate for therapy with ZYFLO CR, and important safety information about ZYFLO CR.

This information is for educational purposes only. If you or someone you care about has asthma, only a doctor can determine the best type of treatment(s) for managing your asthma symptoms.

ZYFLO CR is an oral medication that is used in the prevention and daily treatment of asthma in adults and children 12 years of age or older.

ZYFLO CR is not a rescue medication (it is not a bronchodilator) and should not be used if you need relief right away for an asthma attack, but may be continued during acute, or sudden, asthma attacks.

Tell your health care provider if you have ever had liver problems, including hepatitis, jaundice (yellow eyes or skin), or dark urine.

People with active liver disease should not take ZYFLO CR; a simple blood test to monitor liver function is recommended before starting and while taking ZYFLO CR.

Patients taking theophylline, propranolol or warfarin in combination with ZYFLO CR should be monitored by their doctor to determine if drug dosages need to be adjusted.

Mild to moderate side effects associated with the use of ZYFLO CR are sinusitis, nausea and throat pain.

Please tell your doctor if you are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications before taking ZYFLO CR.

The most common side effects reported by patients treated with ZYFLO CR vs placebo were sinusitis (6.5% vs 4%), nausea (5% vs 1.5%), and pharyngolaryngeal pain (5% vs 4%).
